Spring 2019 Elections

Greetings programs, The Computer Science Club will be holding elections for the Spring 2019 term on Thursday, May 16th in MC Comfy (MC 3001) at 19:00. During the meeting, the president, vice-president, treasurer and assistant vice-president (formerly secretary) will be elected, the sysadmin will be ratified, and the librarian and office manager will be appointed. If you'd like to run for any of these positions or nominate someone, you can write your name on the whiteboard in the CSC office (MC 3036/3037) or send me (Charlie) an email at cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca. Every effort will be made to note down whiteboard nominations, but it is highly recommended to send me an email in addition to writing on the whiteboard. She will be talking about the problems faced, and algorithms used in the film industry to go from 2D to S3D. Come listen to the talk and enjoy some free food! ====== Abstract: ====== For the last 10 years, most blockbusters have been released in both 2D and stereoscopic 3D. The move from 2D to S3D is non-trivial and involves many new algorithms and technologies. But there are still many problems to be solved and many improvements that can still be made. (including nonmembers) Details for both the events follow. ========== Prof. Talk ========== Abstract: Animated Tilings By slowly varying the shapes of tiles in a tiling, it's possible to create fun and interesting abstract animations. Many of these animations are a good fit for the genre of looping mathematical GIFs that proliferate in social media. Scheduled Downtime for CSC Machines Thursday, Feb. 21

Hi all, There will be scheduled downtime for maintenance on many Computer Science Club servers on Thursday, February 21 beginning at 9:45 AM. Machines are expected to be up by 11:30 AM, but issues may arise that require more time to correct. The list of affected public servers is: taurine sucrose corn-syrup high-fructose-corn-syrup (hfcs) caffeine (csclub.uwaterloo.ca <http://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/>) Please save all of your work as servers will be rebooted throughout the maintenance period. We also suggest you take backups for anything important. During this time, CSC email will be inaccessible but mail will be queued up and delivered after the maintenance period is over. All websites hosted by CSC will be inaccessible for a short period of time as caffeine is rebooted. CSC Cloud will also be unavailable, and any virtual machines on CSC cloud will have to be manually restarted after the maintenance window. Hello CSC programs! It's that time of the term - election time! That time of the term where you get to congregate, see faces old and new, nom on tasty timbits and execute your constitutional rights to vote in new exec. The CSC elections will be held on Wednesday, January 16th at 6:30pm in the MC Comfy Lounge. We will be electing a President, Vice President, Assistant Vice President, and a Treasurer. The elected exec will appoint a System Administrator, Office Manager, Librarian, and IMAPd. You must be a MathSoc social member (e.g., a math faculty undergrad, or other student who has paid MathSoc dues) to run for an elected position or System Administrator, and to vote. If you'd like to run or nominate someone for a position, please put a piece of paper with their name and user id in the nominations box in the CSC or email that information to cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca. The nomination period will end one week from now, on Tuesday January 15th at 6pm. A full description of the positions and procedures are in the CSC constitution. Greetings Programs, We will be having a prof talk with Professor Gregor Richards, on November 12, 5:30 PM - 7 PM, in MC 4063. He will be talking about netplay in emulators, which allows for playing video games over the internet. Prof. Richards is the maintainer of the netplay infrastructure for RetroArch, a popular emulator frontend for multiple platforms. Abstract: You've got a game, but you didn't write it. You're running it by emulating the machine it was meant to run on, and the machine it was meant to run on never had support for networking. Now, you want to play with your friend, over the Internet. Oh, and it's not acceptable to incur any latency between your controller and the game while we're at it. Surely that can't be possible, right? Wrong. This talk will discuss the re-emulation technique for netplay used commercially by a system called GGPO and freely in an emulator frontend called RetroArch, and how similar techniques can be applied to make networking work in other scenarios it was never meant for. This will be an unprepared, impromptu talk with no slides, so it should either be a fascinating dive into a little-heard-of technique, or an impenetrable mess of jargon and algorithms. Greetings Programs, We will be having our first prof talk of the term with Professor Richard Mann on November 5, 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM, in MC 4063. He will be talking about the BBC micro:bit - an embedded computer that's popular with hobbyists and comes with a variety of peripherals. We are also looking for speakers for Alt-tab! Have something you want talk about? Want to rant about {X technology} to a captive audience? If yes, then email vice-president(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca with an abstract. Alt-Tab is the CSC's lightning talk event (albeit slightly longer), and talks are 10-15 minutes long. Read below for more details! (Details for both of these events follow) ========== Prof. Talk ========== Abstract: BBC micro:bit (microbit.org) was introduced in 2015 and has since become popular with educators and hobbyists. Micro:bit uses an ARM Cortex M0 processor running the "mbed" OS/runtime (mbed.arm.com) It has a built in LED 7x7 array, two buttons, compass, accelerometer, infra red transceivers, and low power wireless communication. Most importantly, it has multiple analog and digital pins to connect to the external world. Web based tools compile gui/blocks, javascript, or python to executable (HEX) files that run on the device. The device appears as a USB drive. It is programmed by copying (dragging) the HEX image to the device. Once programmed, the device runs standalone and communicates with the the host computer via a serial port API. All of this is great fun and a gateway into electronics and real time programming. In this talk I will present a brief introduction to micro:bit, electronics, and electronic signal measurement (voltmeter, function generator, oscilloscope). We will measure the run time performance of the micro:bit, in particular the operation of the analog inputs and outputs and the response time/latency of the device and consider its suitability for user interface, music and audio projects. ========================= Call for Alt-Tab Speakers ========================= CSC will be hosting Alt-Tab, a slightly longer version of lightning talks. It will be a night full of friendly talks during the week of November 26. We need speakers! Contact vice-president(a)edu.uwaterloo.ca, with your tentative talk title and a short abstract if you would like to give a talk. Slides are not required. Please aim for a 10-15 minute talk. I'll send an email with the list of talks closer to the date of the event. Please send titles and abstract by November 19th. Here are some topics that our members have presented before.
