Call for Alt-Tab Talks on Wed. March 28

Greetings programs, CSC will be hosting Alt-Tab, the Computer Science version of Short Attention Span Math Seminars (SASMS) hosted by that math club down the hall. It will be a night full of friendly talks on Wednesday, March 28, 6:00 PM until late. We need talks! Contact me, s455wang(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca, with your tentative talk title and a short abstract if you would like to give a talk. Slides are not required. Please aim for a 10-15 minute talk. I'll send an email with the list of talks closer to the date of the event. Here are some topics that our members have presented before. Learn about Git+Python, the FUTURE, and hang out!

Hello programs! Some of our members have been hard at work organizing events for you, and there are now three this very week! There's a git + Python workshop this Thursday, and an out-of-town speaker on Monday and Tuesday. All good things! Of course, we're having food and coffee at all the events. You can see the three events on our Facebook page or website, but here's a quick summary for our important members. https://www.facebook.com/pg/watcsc/events/ 1. maddog's talk - Programming in the 22nd Century We're bringing in maddog to talk on Monday, he's the executive director of Linux International and was just in Brazil for another conference. He'll be talking about how programming has changed since C was a hot topic in the 1970s and RAM was measured in kilobytes. For those of you who have been exposed to CS 350, this may be of interest! The event is at 6pm on Monday, in the MC Comfy, and we'll be bringing you food. 2. talk to maddog (and eat food) We're getting maddog to stay for another day, just so that you can hang out with him. He's been in the industry since the 1970s, so he'll have lots of war stories. Want to ask him whether you should choose an Arduino or an RPi for FINE 204 wearable media? Want to find out how to save money by using FOSS? I do, and he'll know. The event is at 6pm on Tuesday, in the MC Comfy, and we'll be bringing you food. 3. Git + Python workshop (2A members, come on out!) And finally, a workshop event hosted by amazing members Charlie and Fatema! For those of you in 2A or lower, this workshop is geared to you. Come with a laptop and a GitHub account and we'll feed you and show you how to use version control in a digestible way. GitHub is a really common tool, Python is also really fun, and we're giving you yummy pastries so it's pretty low risk. Cool shirts! Free stuff! Awesome speaker!

Hey CSC programs! A quick update on some stuff you might be interested in: --COOL SHIRTS-- One of our member made a cool goose design for a shirt last term, and last term's CSC did a t-shirt run that was popular and ran out really quickly. We're doing another run of shirts this term, this time in maroon! Shirts come in women's and unisex styles. Perfect if you missed out last time. We can't ship shirts anywhere, but we'll hold onto it so you or a friend can pick it up at a later date. --FREE STUFF-- For on-campus members, we took a crack at cleaning out the office and have some computer hardware that you can plunder in a box outside the office. Motherboards, CPUs, and cool trinkets. Swing by the office and feel free to plunder. --AWESOME SPEAKER-- We're bringing in an out-of-town speaker by popular request, Jon "maddog" Hall! He'll be talking and having a discussion group on the 12th and 13th of March (in a couple weeks). Keep an eye on our Facebook and mailing list for details! Here is his talk: -Programming for the Twenty-Second Century- Many things have changed since the early days of programming, but many programs are written as if they were for the machines of the 20th century which had small memories, no cache, single core CPUs, small address spaces. Even the definition of "performance" has changed. This talk will investigate some of these issues and hopefully lead people to better programming. CSC T-shirt Orders Now Available

Hi CSC! As of now we're taking orders for this term's T-shirts. The design is the same as last term (goose at a keyboard, thanks again to Fatema Boxwala for the awesome design!), but this time printed on red T-shirts (as per our poll last term, it was the second-most popular colour choice). The shirts will be printed on Bella/Canvas 3001c Maroon (for unisex) and 6004 Cardinal Red (for women's). Sizing charts are available in the office. To order, please come into the office with your $15 and speak to any member of the office staff, who will then be able to take your order. Shirt orders are first come first served, so act fast. The Computer Science Club is hosting an interview preparation workshop to help you get some practice for any upcoming co-op interviews you might have. We'll: - talk about the different kinds of programming jobs you can apply and interview for - present some general advice for tech interviews - have sessions in parallel for software engineering, frontend engineering (mobile/web), and DevOps interviews If you're in 2B or below, you'll probably find this event helpful! We'll also be amending the constitution tomorrow. The Constitution doesn't tell me to tell you that we're having dinner and coffee at the code party tomorrow, or that it's going to be a good time hanging out with the great members in our club (like you!) Code Party 0 in STC 0040 this Thursday at 6PM

Hi all, Code Party 0 has been booked for 6PM, Thursday, January 25, in STC 0040. We will have a projector for the event so you can show off your cool side project if you want. But don't worry, it's not a hackathon. We will hold a General Meeting at this event to elect a Secretary and possibly amend our constitution. Currently, the only nominee for Secretary is Arshia Mufti. Nominations can be submitted in-person to Patrick Melanson, our President, or to cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca. Dr. Andrew Morton will be giving a brief talk on CS 493/CS 494, also known "fourth-year design project for CS". The calendar description for 493 is attached below. Students work in teams on substantial open-ended computer science problems as part of the CS 493/494 course sequence. Lectures describe project management fundamentals and ethical and legal issues in computing. Students form teams, select projects, define project goals, perform risk assessment, establish a project plan, and develop a prototype. Possible project topics can include development of software systems, analysis of extensions to existing systems across the field, and experimental computer science.[Offered: F] Prereq: CS 341, 350; Computer Science students only. Code Party 0, General Meeting and Special Elections

Hi all, The Computer Science Club will be hosting its first event, Code Party 0, next Thursday, January 25. Although the room booking has not been finalized yet, the event is expected to start at 6:00 PM and run until around 11:00 PM. Code Party is an event where you can come and socialize with other members and work on any project you want, including schoolwork and side projects. There will be food. Expect a future email that will pin down the location and time. In addition to the party, we will be holding another general meeting for special elections and amendments to our constitution. At the special elections, we will be electing a Secretary. Nominations will close Wednesday, January 24 at 6:00 PM. You can submit nominations to cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca <mailto:cro@csclub.uwaterloo.ca>, or in-person to Patrick Melanson, our President. Currently, only Arshia Mufti (a2mufti) has been nominated for the position. Our constitutional amendments are minor and mainly serve to clarify what should have always been the case. In short, the changes are: During each election, if the position has no listed nominees, the CRO will take nominations from the floor. Any present, eligible member can be nominated. Restrict the count of quorum to full members, ie. MathSoc social members. Update the Code of Conduct to refer to relevant UWaterloo policies where appropriate. This is only an overview of the changes.
