Anything relating to data science and machine learning is fair game, whether it's a fun project you worked on, an exciting concept or technology, a hot take on the field, or some other interesting topic! They're looking for a set of talks that are some combination of fun, informative, and diverse. The event will consist of 6 talks that are 10 minutes plus 3-4 minutes for questions each. New servers and other announcements

Greetings programs, On behalf of the Systems Committee I am pleased to bring you several updates regarding new servers and services. New Servers =========== We are announcing the general availability of the following servers: neotame.csclub is a server with special configuration to act as a host for IRC clients. If you had an IRC session on taurine before taurine caught fire, we encourage you to use neotame for it now. neotame also listens on numerous low and high ports for your SSH convenience. For complete information, please check the machine list on the CSC Wiki. carbonated-water.csclub is a 48-core general-purpose server with 128GB of RAM. sorbitol.csclub is a 40-core general-purpose server with 64GB of RAM. mannitol.csclub is a 40-core general-purpose server with 64GB of RAM. We would like to thank the Math Endowment Fund for graciously funding several of these servers, and the Computer Science Computing Facility for providing hardware for one of these servers as well as two other new servers which have replaced several of our older internal services machines. Upgrades to Cloud Services ========================== Due to a series of poorly-timed hardware failures, our private cloud services have been degraded for a while. We would like to conduct an upgrade to the cloud servers that will involve a complete reinstall of several critical components and services. As such, current users of the CSC Beta Cloud are asked to migrate any services on cloud instances out of these VMs before Friday, November 8th. At this time the upgrade is scheduled to begin and after this date your instances will be unavailable. We expect to announce the availability of the upgraded cloud services in Winter 2020. CSC Systems Committee - looking for new members

Greetings CSC members, Are you curious about what makes the CSC's infrastructure tick? Do you want to gain experience in Linux server operations and administration? Would you like to help improve the experience of CSC users and test out new technologies? The Systems Committee (syscom) is looking for new members to help administer and upgrade the CSC's fleet of servers and office terminals. This is a volunteer position with no fixed commitment of hours and no regular meetings. Members of syscom are responsible for the day-to-day management and maintenance of the CSC's server infrastructure and office terminals, and are supervised by the systems administrator. Typical syscom work includes installing and upgrading software packages on servers and workstations, diagnosing and fixing issues with servers, and responding to questions from CSC members about using our computer systems. Experience with the Linux command line is great; experience with installing Linux yourself or working with Linux servers is a big asset; but even if you don't have any experience in these areas but are interested in learning about how it's done, I encourage you to apply! If you are interested in joining, please send an email to me personally (mtrberzi AT csclub DOT uwaterloo DOT ca) and include your CSC username, program and year of study, and any relevant experience you might have with Linux or Linux server administration. I will follow up with you in a few days to schedule an introductory meeting on campus (if you are not on campus this term or cannot attend, we can make other arrangements). Hi all, The CS Club is hosting a Git 101 workshop this Saturday (Sept 21) and Saturday (Sept 22) at 12 PM in QNC 1502. The workshop spans two days with the first day covering Git basics such as add, commit, diff, log, GitHub Basics, etc. The second workshop will cover advanced topics like branching, merging, merge conflicts, feature branch workflow, etc. If you are familiar with Git basics, feel free to only attend the second workshop. OSSN is a network of university students and clubs who believe that open source is the engine that powers innovation. Fall 2019 Elections

Greetings programmers, The Computer Science Club will be holding elections for fall 2019 term on Thursday, September 12th in MC Comfy (MC 3001) at 19:00. During the meeting, the president, vice-president, treasurer and assistant vice-president (formerly secretary) will be elected, the sysadmin will be ratified, and the librarian and office manager will be appointed. If you'd like to run for any of these positions or nominate someone, you can write your name on the whiteboard in the CSC office (MC 3036/3037) or send me (Rajat) an email at cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca. Every effort will be made to note down whiteboard nominations, but it is highly recommended to send me an email in addition to writing on the whiteboard. CSC Server Downtime August 17-18

Hi all, There will be a power outage on campus from 7:00 am until 9:00 pm on Sunday, August 18th (EDT). To prepare for this outage, all Computer Science Club servers will be down starting at 11:00 PM on Saturday, August 17th. This includes web hosting, CSC Cloud, email, and mirror. Please make sure you save all of your work before then, and we also recommend backing up your files just in case. After the power comes back, some servers may remain unavailable for a few minutes as they boot up. If any issues arise, an update email will be sent with further information. We apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, we were not able to arrange for a backup generator to keep our servers up.
