Greetings, members! We welcome our new members and salute our veterans with a hearty EXTERMINATE. In addition to our elections on Tuesday, we have a few upcoming events we wanted to let you know about to kick off the term. MATH WINE AND CHEESE: Friday, Sept. 14, 5:30-7:00 PM, M3 Atrium --- Consider this to be a cordial invitation from MathSoc and the Dean's Office to attend the first annual wine and cheese social in the M3 Atrium this Friday. This will be an opportunity to chat with faculty, eat cheese, and drink wine---what could be better? Pick up invitations for your profs in the MathSoc Office (MC 3038). Dress is informal, but feel free to dress up if you'd like. The event is open to all ages. Do bring ID if you're planning on drinking. CODE PARTY 0 -- FROSH-A-THON: Friday, Sept. 14, 7:00 PM, Comfy Lounge (MC 3001) --- Our first code party of the term is this Friday, if you haven't seen the posters, with a loose "Linux installfest" theme for those interested. We will be providing (caffeinated!) drinks, pizza, and other delicious snacks for your hacking pleasure. This is also a recruiting event, so please make sure to bring your friends. We are not limited to members! PALANTIR TECH TALK & GRAD HOUSE SOCIAL: Thursday, Sept. 20, 6:30 PM, DC 1302 --- Palantir is back this term with another tech talk. Expect cool engineers, free shirts, goodies and food if you attend! Fall 2012 Elections Have Begun

Greetings members! The election period for Fall 2012 Computer Science Club executive has begun! Come down to the MC Comfy Lounge on Tuesday September 18, 2012 at 4:00PM, where elections will be held for this term's President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary. Sysadmin, Librarian and Office Manager selections will also occur at this time. Nominations will run until Monday September 17, 2012 at 4:00PM. You can submit a nomination ( including yourself ) by writing the person's user id in the nomination chart on the office whiteboard. Alternatively, you may e-mail nominations to this term's CRO at cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca . We're holding our first "welcome back" code party of the term on Friday September 14th! Come join us in the MC Comfy Lounge (MC 3001). Whether you're a hacking guru or a newbie to computer science, you're welcome to attend; there will be activities for all! Our party is loosely themed as a Linux installfest, where we will have a team of members dedicated to helping individuals install and learn to use one of many flavours of Linux. Possible Downtime (all csc machines)

The CSC will be migrating server racks sometime in the next few weeks. We will be getting new UPSes, so most machines will experience brief downtime as they have to be physically moved. *We have allotted 2 hours for the migration process*, but hosts and services may be up before that time. The following CSC hosts will be high priority for migration as they affect all our services, thus we will aim to reduce downtime for these hosts as much as possible: - ginseng - glomag (caffeine, mail) - sodium-benzoate (mirror) Additionally, our switch will also be migrated, so network connectivity will be temporarily interrupted. All other hosts will be migrated as quickly as possible, and will not have service during the some period of the migration. All services will be affected, and all machines will at some point be shut down. Because of this, **please be wary of starting new long-term running jobs** on any of the CSC hosts over the next few weeks. Currently the estimated day and time for migration is: *Friday, August 31, afternoon.* Another e-mail will be sent on the actual day of migration to confirm this. Canadian Undergraduate Mathematics Conference 2012

Hail, membership! Consider this a special invitation to undergraduate students that would like to attend CUMC 2012! For those of you that are not familiar with CUMC, it is the Canadian Undergraduate Mathematics Conference, and is being held this year at UBC Okanagan Campus, in Kelowna, British Columbia. (A gorgeous city, especially in the summer!) It will be a great experience for all those interested in mathematics. Regardless of your personal ability in mathematics, the conference is aimed at an undergraduate level, and all undergraduate mathematics students will be able to take something away from it. We will be departing by plane on Tuesday, July 10th in the afternoon, and will be returning in the evening on Sunday, July 15. All airfare and accommodations are generously funded by the Mathematics Endowment Fund (MEF), the Mathematics Society (MathSoc), and the Dean's Office. If you are interested in attending, please contact either myself directly (ehashman(a)uwaterloo.ca) Joseph Horan (jahoran(a)uwaterloo.ca) or email cumc2012(a)mathsoc.uwaterloo.ca. Joseph will also be operating a booth on the third floor of the MC during lunchtimes, right outside the CSC, if you have any questions. You will need to pay your conference fee online before we can consider you officially signed up. You can do this at http://cumc.math.ca . The conference fee is $95. We may have to levy a small additional transportation fee for buses (~$25) if our funding does not cover costs entirely. You'll also be responsibile for your own personal incidental expenses, but everything else should be covered! We have limited space for 40 students, so please make sure that you pay your conference fee and contact either myself or Joseph as soon as possible. Hello all! I hope you had a nice break between terms. We're going to kick off the spring term fast, so get ready. ELECTIONS: Thursday, May 10, 4:30 PM, Comfy Lounge (MC 3001) --- Calum T. Dalek asked me to relay the details of the election. We will be holding the election at 4:30 PM in the Comfy Lounge on May 10th. PALANTIR TECH TALK: "mmap and the Mortgage Crisis" by Palantir Engineers; Monday, May 7, 6:00 PM, DC 1302 --- Palantir is a Palo Alto-based intelligence analysis software company that has partnered with the CSC to put on a tech talk and social. There will be free food, free drinks, and for one lucky winner, a free iPad, so why not come on out? Abstract: In the aftermath of the 2008 economic crisis, large banks have been saddled with the prospect of foreclosing on millions of distressed mortgages, at a financial cost of billions of dollars and an incalculable social cost. Crucial to solving this problem is the ability to model and analyze these millions of loans in real time, enabling lenders to price homes so that they can find effective and mutually beneficial alternatives to foreclosure. In this talk, we'll describe how engineers at Palantir are working on a calculation engine that supports such analyses. We’ll outline our design goals of constructing a platform that supports queries against large sets of data at interactive speeds and exposes a high-level object-oriented interface that enables analysts to construct models intuitively without having to worry about the underlying implementation details. We’ll describe the different architectures we explored in prototyping the system, demo how to use our product to analyze massive datasets, and discuss how we've ultimately deployed it in the field. Prof Talk: Multi-processor Real-time Systems

Greetings, members! This Thursday, at 4:30 PM in MC 4021, the CSC will be hosting a talk by professor Bill Cowan on Multi-processor Real-time Systems. Here's an abstract: ------ Programming systems that obey hard real-time constraints is difficult. So is programming multiple CPUs that interact to solve a single problem. On rare occasions it is possible to mix two difficult problems to create one easy problem and multi-CPU real-time is, on the face of it, just such an occasion. Give each deadline its own CPU and it will never be missed. This intuition is, unfortunately, incorrect, which does not, however, prevent it being tried in many real-time systems. For three decades, fourth year students have been exploring this problem in CS452, using multiple tasks (virtual CPUs) running on a single CPU. It is now time to consider whether modern developments in CPU architecture make it possible to use multiple CPUs in CS452 given the practical constraint of a twelve week semester. This talk will describe the nature of computation typical of real-time systems, architectural solutions currently employed in the course, and possible architectures for multi-CPU systems. ------ Drinks will be served; we hope to see you there! CSC/AMD OpenCL Competition

Hello CSC Members, Want to win a new laptop or GPU? The University of Waterloo Computer Science Club and AMD are running an OpenCL programming competition. If you're interested in writing massively parallel software on the OpenCL platform, come out and join us for our introductory code party! The introductory part is at 7:00 PM on February 16th, 2012, in MC's Comfy Lounge (MC 3001). We'll be presenting a tutorial on writing OpenCL and GPGPU applications. OpenCL reference books will be available at this tutorial, courtesy of AMD. OpenCL is an open standard, and works as an extension of the C and C++ programming languages to allow programmers to control different types of processors at one time - multiple CPUs, GPUs, and Cell processors. OpenCL's parallel computing features make it very effective at simulating a variety of real-world systems as well as solving interesting computer science problems. Contest registration begins after the introductory code party on the 16th. If you want to participate and possibly win prizes, you'll need to register here between the 16th and 24th of February. On March 2nd, we'll be holding a contest code party. All contestants are invited; the submissions deadline will be at 12:00 AM. At the conclusion of the party, there will be judging and prizes. Participants will have the chance to win one of two HP laptops or an AMD desktop GPU. Algorithms Talk / UNIX 101 / SDN Hackathon!

Hello, membership! I hope you have all been having a pleasant term. We have a few events coming up that we'd like to share... ALGORITHMS TALK: Feb. 7, 6:00 - 7:00 pm, MC 4045 --- Are you interested in algorithms? What is an algorithm anyway? We will discuss two or three neat problems with very elegant answers. Some of these answers are actually fast, and some will result in a proof that the problem is NP-complete. (What does that mean?) We will also discuss the motivating thoughts that led us to the solutions. Join Victor Fan for his talk, intended for all second-year math students with a solid first-year background. Even if you are a first-year or a seasoned veteran, you will probably still take home something new, so please come out to enjoy the talk! Refreshments will be served. UNIX 101: Feb. 9, 5:00 - 6:00 pm, MC 3003 --- New to the Unix computing environment? If you seek an introduction, look no further. We will be holding a series of tutorials on using Unix, beginning with Unix 101 this upcoming Thursday. Topics that will be covered include basic interaction with the shell and the motivations behind using it, and an introduction to compilation. You'll have to learn this stuff in CS 246 anyways, so why not get a head start! Open Data Code Party

Greetings folks, We're teaming up with the UW Open Data Initiative to host our next code party on Friday, November 18 at 7PM in the MC Comfy Lounge. As always, you're welcome to work on your own projects, but we'll be hacking on some open data related projects: 1. Design & build UW APIs. We're looking for API design experts to bring scalable API designs to the party. At the party, we'll work on implementing these designs. The APIs that you build will be used by everyone to access the university data made available by the Open Data Initiative. 2. Applications using university data that is currently available. Hello, CSC membership! Hope you are all doing well on your midterms so far. If you haven't dropped by our office or checked out the website, here's a reminder for a few upcoming events that we'd like you to come out to. CODE PARTY 2 --- Take a break from studying and join us for our hackathon this Friday night, October 21st, in the Comfy Lounge (MC 3001) from 7 pm onward. Work on your own projects, open source code, or even your homework, and prepare yourselves for chiptunes galore! Refreshments and caffeinated beverages will be provided. Looking forward to seeing you there! UNIX 102 "Tools in the Unix Environment" --- In this section of our Unix 101 series, we will introduce you to some of the powerful tools that make the Unix environment so enticing to developers and power users alike. Topics covered include: "real" editors, text processing, navigating a multiuser Unix environment, standard tools, and more. If you missed Unix 101 but still know your way around the shell, you'll feel right at home; and even if you missed Unix 101, we'll still have people to bring you up to speed. If you aren't interested in this or feel comfortable with these tasks, watch out for Unix 103 and 104 to get more depth in power programming tools on Unix. Unix 102 will be held from 4:30 to 6:00 pm on Monday, October 24 in the Digimon Lab (the big mac lab or MC 3003). There is a tutorial scheduled in this lab at 4:30, so if you'd like some help before we start, come to the CSC office a little earlier. Hope to see you there! Mozilla Talk Oct. 13 / Call For Member Talks

Hello, members! The Computer Science Club will be hosting a number of talks this term. We would like to invite you to see our first guest speaker next week, and we also encourage you to volunteer to give a talk of your own if you are interested! MOZILLA TALK Ehsan Akghari on "How Browsers Work" --- We are excited to announce that we will be hosting our first guest talk of the term with a senior engineer from Mozilla, Ehsan Akghari. Please come out to MC 4020 on October 13 between 6:30 and 7:30 pm to learn about the internal structure of the web browser. Abstract: Web browsers have evolved. From their humble beginnings as simple HTML rendering engines they have grown and evolved into rich application platforms. This talk will start with the fundamentals: how a browser creates an on-screen representation of the resources downloaded from the network. (Boring, right? But we have to start somewhere.) From there we'll get into the really exciting stuff: the latest innovations in Web browsers and how those innovations enable — even encourage — developers to build more complex applications than ever before. You'll see real-world examples of people building technologies on top of these "simple rendering engines" that seemed impossible a short time ago. About the speaker: Ehsan Akhgari has contributed to the Mozilla project for more than 5 years. He has worked on various parts of Firefox, including the user interface and the rendering engine. He originally implemented Private Browsing in Firefox. Right now he's focusing on the editor component in the Firefox engine. MEMBER TALKS --- Is there a topic or project you're particularly passionate about? You should give a talk about it! The CSC plans to hold two member talks this term, though we are happy to accommodate more if there is interest. Talks usually last about an hour, but if your topic is not that extensive, we can also accommodate a number of shorter talks in a single evening. Greetings, members! I am pleased to invite you to the CSC's first two events of the term occurring this upcoming week! UNIX 101 --- New to the Unix computing environment? If you seek an introduction, look no further. We will be holding a series of tutorials on using Unix, beginning with Unix 101 in MC 3004 on Thursday, September 29 at 4:00 pm. Topics that will be covered include basic interaction with the shell and more advanced topics such as scripting and job control, the file system, and using the secure shell protocol. If you're already familiar with these topics, don't hesitate to come to Unix 102 to learn about documents, editing, and other related tasks, and watch out for Unix 103, 104, and 201 that will cover power tools and authoring software on Unix in depth later in the term. CODE PARTY 1 --- Join us in the Comfy Lounge (MC 3001) on Friday, September 30 for a night of code and electronic music! Our theme for the first code party of the term will be an introduction to collaborative development, where we will present several ideas for small projects to work on for the inexperienced. Feel free to also hack on your personal projects, contribute to open source software, or just work on your homework. Caffeinated beverages and edibles will be available for your hacking pleasure! The festivities will begin at 7:00 pm and continue into the night. Feel free to come out at any time for as long as you like, and make sure you bring your laptop! New Mailing List: csc-industry OFFICE TRAINING --- Fall 2011 office training is scheduled for this Friday, September 23 at 4:30 pm in the CSC office (MC 3036/3037). If you are interested in helping out around the office or getting more involved with the club, we encourage you to come out and become a member of our office staff! The CSC is often approached by industry representatives who offer information on current events and employment opportunities, and past practice has been to refer them to the uw.csc newsgroup for posting. We feel that this isn't sufficient for our interested members, and have created a new mailing list, csc-industry. Hello, Club elections will be tomorrow September 19th at 4:30 PM in the Comfy Lounge (MC 3001). All members are invited to attend. After the election the new executive will hold the first meeting of the club and fill appointed positions, so if you'd like to get involved or help shape the direction of the club come out. This is also an excellent opportunity to renew your membership for the term, if you have not yet done so. If you are unable to attend but would still like to vote please e-mail your ballot to me at cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca. Upcoming CSC Events: Steganography talk and Code Party

Hello CSC Members! We've got two CSC events coming up next week that I hope to see you at: 2011-07-20, 4:30 PM, in MC2038: An Introduction to Steganography<http://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/events/MC_2038-2011-07-20-4:30_PM>. As part of the CSC member talks series, Yomna Nasser will be presenting an introduction to steganography. Steganography is the act of hiding information such that it can only be found by its intended recipient. It has been practiced since ancient Greece, and is still in use today. This talk will include an introduction to the area, history, and some basic techniques for hiding information and detecting hidden data. There will be an overview of some of the mathematics involved, but nothing too rigorous. 2011-07-22, 7PM onwards, MC Comfy Lounge (MC 3001): Code Party 3<http://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/events/Comfy_Lounge-2011-07-22-7_PM>. Hello CSC members! Do you like going outside? Are you vitamin-D deficient from being in the MC too long? Do you think marshmallows, hotdogs, and fire are a delicious combination? This Saturday, the CSC is going outside! Around 4PM, we're going to Columbia Lake for some outdoor fun. We'll have Frisbees, kites, snacks, and some drinks. We'll be sticking around until dusk, when we're going to have a campfire with marshmallows and hotdogs. We plan to be there until 10PM, but of course you're welcome to come for any subinterval. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. You can show up for any portion of it. You should bring a laptop, and probably have something in mind to work on, though you're welcome with neither. If you're looking for something to do, there's always lots of projects that could use a hand, and somebody willing to guide you along. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
