Hello CSC, This is a reminder that Battle Decks today is happening from 6:30pm to 8:30pm in MC 4041. There is an informal sign up on the white board inside the CSC room. What is Battle Decks? You prepare a slide deck with 5 slides relating to one concept. Email it to veep@ <veep(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca>csclub.uwaterloo.ca<veep(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca>. At 6:30 we will randomly choose a presentation from the submissions and have people present the concept impromptu. The idea is to become comfortable with public speaking, by practising in front of your peers, to learn a new concept and to entertain. I hope to see you there. Submissions for slides end at 6pm. You will only be able to present a slide if you submit a deck. The presentations are to run no more than 6 mins each. Thank you Visha CSC Veep W14

Enjoy a free dinner, relax, and share ideas with your friends about your favourite topics in computer science. 2) Battle Decks (2014-03-18 - 7:00 PM - MC 4041) Create a 5-slide PowerPoint presentation about a specific topic. Bring it with you to the event (on a flash drive). Submit it into the lottery. Select a random PowerPoint presentation from the lottery and talk about it on the spot. 3) HackWaterloo (2014-03-28 - 7:00 PM - Multimedia Lab at CPH 1346) Work on a software project for 24 hours in teams of up to 4 members. Swag will be provided by Facebook and Google. A Microsoft Surface Table will be awarded to the winning team. Notice of Scheduled Downtime: high-fructose-corn-syrup

Greetings programs, This is a maintenance advisory for scheduled downtime on the machine: high-fructose-corn-syrup Maintenance will be taking place on this machine on 2014-02-18 after 5:30 pm. The maintenance work will involve halting the machine for a period of time during this window. We plan to install a 750GB SSD into high-fructose-corn-syrup in order to provide a fast local scratch drive. This should increase the performance of this machine for users who need fast access to large amounts of temporary disk space for their jobs. Bloomberg Talk Tomorrow / UNIX 101 and Code Party 0 on Feb 13

Greetings members, I hope you have all been having a good term so far. We have a number of events planned for the next couple of weeks. Tomorrow at 5:30PM, we have a database talk from Alex Scotti of Bloomberg. Thursday of next week, we will have UNIX 101, a basic command-line tutorial, followed immediately by our first code party. Longer descriptions follow. Bloomberg's Alex Scotti will be presenting a talk this Tuesday on concurrency control implementations in relational databases. Free swag will be handed out at the event. The talk will take place in MC 4058 at 5:30 PM on February 4th, 2014. Next Thursday (Feb 13), we will offer UNIX 101, where people can learn the basics of using command-line tools found commonly on UNIX-like operating systems, such as Linux. The event will take place in the Mac Lab in MC 3003, from 5:30-6:30PM. Immediately after UNIX 101, at 6:30PM, we will be having our first annual code party in the MC Comfy Lounge (MC 3001). Enjoy a free dinner, relax, share ideas with your friends about your favourite topics in computer science, and work on that side project you've been thinking of for the past week. Winter 2014 CSC Elections

The Computer Science Club will run its termly executive elections on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 5:30 pm in the MC Comfy Lounge. At this meeting, the president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary of the Computer Science Club will be elected. The system administrator, office manager, and other appointed positions are typically appointed at this meeting as well. In particular, voting this time will be heads-down, hands-up voting only by MathSoc social members. You may request voting by ballot, but overruling my interpretation of voting eligibility would require a majority of the assembly. Boring legalistic details follow. Any contingencies not accounted for below or mandated by the constitution or other applicable documents shall be determined at the discretion of the CRO or, in the case of disagreement on such a procedure, a majority vote of present voting members. Nomination procedure: 1. Anyone eligible to be a full CSC member may be nominated for one or more of the positions for election: president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary. 2. A person may nominate him/herself or someone else for any number of positions. 3. Nominations will be accepted by the CRO via any of the following means: (a) in person (b) email (to cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca) (c) the CSC mailbox in MathSoc (d) the whiteboard in the CSC office (MC 3036/3037) 4. Nominations will be accepted immediately, until the end of the nomination period (Wed Jan 15 2014 at 4:30 PM). Thereafter the final list will be posted on the CSC website. Election procedure: 1. Anyone present and eligible to join the CSC or renew CSC membership for the fall will be permitted to do so at the beginning of elections. 2. A list of the candidates for each position will be read. 3. The positions will be elected in the following order: president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary. Anyone elected to a position will be removed from consideration for following positions. 4. Before each position is elected, a summary of the duties attendant to that position will be given, and each candidate will be permitted to make a brief statement and take questions. 5. Elections will be conducted via heads-down-hands-up approval voting, with the CRO as the final authority on vote counts. Advance votes shall count equal to present votes, except that they are invalidated if the voter is present. In the event of a tie, a runoff election between the equal candidates will be run by the same procedure. Only full CSC members (in particular, MathSoc social members) are eligible to vote. 6. Anyone who is elected but discovered not to be a CSC member must resign the position immediately gain membership. 7. Following the election of these four positions, the meeting will be turned over to the president-elect, who shall begin his/her office by appointing (with the other new exec) the remaining positions. Advance voting procedure: 1. If you are unable to attend the election, you may submit an advance vote via email only. Such emails must be sent to cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca, and must be received at least one hour before the beginning of elections. 2. Hi all! This will be the last email of the term. Good luck with your exams and enjoy the break! OFFICE CLEAN-OUT: TOMORROW, DEC. 4 --- It has been a long time since the office was last cleaned. Cleaning will be a monumental effort, and will be taking place tomorrow, Dec. 4, starting around 11AM. If you have any unclaimed belongings in the office, THEY WILL BE THROWN OUT OR REPOSSESSED. Please *ensure* you have not left any personal belongings in the office, or email offsck(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca if you aren't able to pick them up before tomorrow. Anyone that is interested in helping out with the office cleaning is free to show up. CTRL-D (END OF TERM PARTY): THURSDAY, DEC. 12 --- Our termly "CTRL-D" party has been scheduled for next Thursday, Dec. 12. CSC Shirts! and other reminders

Greetings programs, CSC SHIRTS --- After much delay, shirts are ready for ordering. They will be black American Apparel shirts, silkscreened with the winning design of our t-shirt contest. See the attached images for the AVL-tree design, courtesy of our winner, Holly Xu. Final pricing and pickup date have not yet been determined, as these are dependent on the number of shirts that will be ordered. Price will be no more than $15 (we hope to price around $10), and shirts will be available for pickup in the CSC office (MC 3036/3037) no later than mid-exam period. CSC-SHIRT DESIGN CONTEST WRAPS UP --- All entries are due this Wednesday, Nov. 13! Winners will be informed by November 15 and the next csc-general email will contain an application for shirts with a link to the winning design. OFFICE CLEANING NOTICE: Get your crap out of the office! --- A note from the office manager. You MUST have your personal belongings out of the office by the deadline. ``We will be cleaning out the office at some point during the exam period. We will be doing a complete inventory and getting rid of anything we do not wish to keep. If you have any personal belongings in the office, please remove them by Dec. 1st or we may throw them out or repossess them.'' Abstract: Bell's recent announcement of their use of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) brings to light a long-standing issue: your internet service provider (ISP) pwns you. They control your IP allocation, your DNS, your ARP, the AS paths. The question has never been about ability---it's about trust. Whether Rogers, AT&T, Virgin, Telus, Vodafone or Wind, your onramp to the internet is your first and most potent point of security failure. Founding member of the Canadian Cybersecurity Institute and employee of local ISP Sentex Sean Howard will vividly demo the reasons you need to be ble to trust your internet provider. Nov. 7, 6:30 PM, PHY 150 --- This week's C++ lecture is presented by Andrei Alexandrescu, entitled "Writing Quick Code in C++, Quickly." Abstract: ``Contemporary computer architectures make it possible for slow code to work reasonably well. They also make it difficult to write really fast code that exploits the CPU amenities to their fullest. And the smart money is on fast code---we're running out of cool things to do with slow code, and the battle will be on doing really interesting and challenging things at the envelope of what the computing fabric endures. ``This talk is an attempt to set forth a few pieces of tactical advice for writing quick code in C++. Applying these is not guaranteed to produce optimal code, but is likely to put it reasonably within the ballpark.'' HACKATHON-CODE PARTY!! (MORE FREE FOOD): Fri. Hello, CSCers! Lots of exciting news for you this week... VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES: Math Open House (Nov. 2) and ONCWIC (Nov. 7-8) --- The CSC has received a couple of calls for volunteers. The Math Faculty Open House requires volunteers for the following: set up, welcoming visitors, giving directions, walking visitors to various buildings, ushers for M3-1006, tour guides for DC, MC, QNC, and M3 (I quote: "NEED MANY, PLEASE SIGN UP"), booth Q&A to answer visitors' questions about programs, and clean up. If interested, please email Gayle Goodfellow at ggoodfel(a)uwaterloo.ca. You will need to attend an information session tomorrow on Tuesday, October 29, in MC 5136B, from 4:30-5:00. Tour guides also need to attend a training session on Thursday, October 31 from 4:45-5:45 in MC 5136. I've heard that Hallowe'en treats will be provided! The Ontario Celebration for Women in Computing is being held at the University of Waterloo this year. TORONTO ERLANG FACTORY LITE CONFERENCE SIGNUPS: Nov. 23 --- The CSC has been invited to attend this Erlang conference in Toronto. Please bring your laptops! C++ GOINGNATIVE LECTURE 0x03 (FREE FOOD!): Thurs. Oct. 31, 6:30 PM, PHY 150 --- Next week's abstract is as follows, featuring Scott Meyers: After years of intensive study (first of C++0x, then of C++11, and most recently of C++14), Scott thinks he finally has a clue. About the effective use of C++11, that is (including C++14 revisions). At last year’s Going Native, Herb Sutter predicted that Scott would produce a new version of Effective C++ in the 2013-14 time frame, and Scott’s working on proving him almost right. Rather than revise Effective C++, Scott decided to write a new book that focuses exclusively on C++11/14: on the things the experts almost always do (or almost always avoid doing) to produce clear, efficient, effective code. In this presentation, Scott will present a taste of the Items he expects to include in Effective C++11/14. SECURITY & PRIVACY SEMINAR 04, Hands-on Seminar on Public Key Crypto: Tues. Nov. 5, 6:00PM, Comfy Lounge (MC 3001) --- Nick Guenther and Murphy Berzish will be holding a hands-on seminar in the Comfy to introduce you to public-private key crypto and how you can practically use it, so bring your laptops! You will learn about PGP, an encryption protocol that provides confidentiality and authenticity. At the seminar, you will learn how to use PGP to send encrypted email and files, provably identify yourself to others, and verify data. Bring a laptop so we can help help you generate your first keypair and give you the chance to form a Web of Trust with your peers. A GSIntroducer from www.GSWoT.org will be on hand. C++ has powerful rules for dealing with low-level program structure. Before a program is ever executed, the compiler determines valuable information about every expression in the source code. The compiler understands exactly how long each object's resources will be needed (lifetime), whether each expression refers to an object that the program has no other way of accessing (rvalueness), and what operations can be performed on each object (type). Using examples from C++98 through C++14, this presentation will demonstrate how to write code that works with the compiler's knowledge to increase robustness, efficiency, and clarity. More details will be available next week. SECURITY & PRIVACY LECTURE 01, Why Should You Care About Security and Privacy: Tues. Oct. 8, 5:00PM, MC 4041 --- Sarah Harvey offers the first lecture of our Security and Privacy series this term on why you should care about privacy: Recent media coverage has brought to light the presence of various government agencies' surveillance programs, along with the possible interference of governments in the establishment and development of standards and software. This brings to question of just how much we need to be concerned about the security and privacy of our information. In this talk we will discuss what all this means in technological and social contexts, examine the status quo, and consider the long-standing implications. This talk assumes no background knowledge of security or privacy, nor any specific technical background. All students are welcome and encouraged to attend. Hey CSC, Office training has been scheduled for this term. As has been done sometimes, but not always, this term, we will be re-training all office staff and reissuing all keys. New members that would like to become office staff are welcome! If you wish to be office staff going forward, or if you wish to have a key to the office, you *must* come to office training. CSC Elections Procedure Update

Upon request, there have been some updates to the election procedure this fall. Nominations are still open as usual (until Monday at 4:30 PM), and the election time and venue remain unchanged (Tuesday September 17 at 4:30 PM in the MC Comfy Lounge). Please attend if you are able (though absentee ballots will still be accepted until Tuesday at 3:30 PM if not). The only changes are procedural. 1. Eligibility Only current active Computer Science Club members will be permitted to vote; membership can be renewed before or at the election before voting has taken place. There is a conflict between informal historical precedent and the constitution about whether CSC members who are not social members of MathSoc may vote. In the event that any such people are present, the assembly will be asked to resolve this before the election. 2. Method of voting As concerns have been raised about the secrecy and integrity of the vote this election, the usual heads-down-hands-up vote will be replaced by a vote by secret paper ballot. Ballots will be handed out only to eligible members (see 1), and each position will be elected in sequence. The election will still be by approval. I expect that I will count the ballots; if the membership wishes, it may appoint another non-candidate to verify my count. CSC Elections, Fall 2013 – Tue Sept 17, 4:30 pm, MC Comfy Lounge

The Computer Science Club will run its termly executive elections on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at 4:30 pm in the MC Comfy Lounge. At this meeting, the president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary of the Computer Science Club will be elected. The system administrator, office manager, and other appointed positions are typically appointed at this meeting as well. Boring legalistic details follow. Any contingencies not accounted for below or mandated by the constitution or other applicable documents shall be determined at the discretion of the CRO or, in the case of disagreement on such a procedure, a majority vote of present voting members. Nomination procedure: 1. Anyone eligible to be a CSC member may be nominated for one or more of the positions for election: president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary. 2. A person may nominate him/herself or someone else for any number of positions. 3. Nominations will be accepted by the CRO via any of the following means: (a) in person (b) email (to cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca) (c) the CSC mailbox in MathSoc (d) the whiteboard in the CSC office (MC 3036/3037) 4. Nominations will be accepted immediately, until the end of the nomination period (Mon Sept 16 2013 at 4:30 PM). Thereafter the final list will be posted on the CSC website. Election procedure: 1. Anyone present and eligible to join the CSC or renew CSC membership for the fall will be permitted to do so at the beginning of elections. 2. A list of the candidates for each position will be read. 3. The positions will be elected in the following order: president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary. Anyone elected to a position will be removed from consideration for following positions. 4. Before each position is elected, a summary of the duties attendant to that position will be given, and each candidate will be permitted to make a brief statement and take questions. 5. Elections will be conducted via heads-down-hands-up approval voting, with the CRO as the final authority on vote counts. Advance votes shall count equal to present votes, except that they are invalidated if the voter is present. In the event of a tie, a runoff election between the equal candidates will be run by the same procedure. 6. Anyone who is elected but discovered not to be a CSC member must resign the position immediately gain membership. 7. Following the election of these four positions, the meeting will be turned over to the president-elect, who shall begin his/her office by appointing (with the other new exec) the remaining positions. Advance voting procedure: 1. If you are unable to attend the election, you may submit an advance vote via email only. Such emails must be sent to cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca, and must be received at least one hour before the beginning of elections. 2. The talk will happen Monday, July 22nd, 17:00, in MC 4020. We'll have more than sufficient meat, Smores, Ice cream, etc. available for enjoyment. =) == The Future of 3D Graphics is in Software! by Gavriel State, founder of TransGaming and Nicolas Capens Monday, July 22nd, 17:00, in MC 4020 Abstract: For some time now, it has been clear that there is strong momentum for convergence between CPU and GPU technologies. Initially, each technology used radically different approaches to processing, but over time GPUs have evolved to support more general purpose use while CPUs have evolved to include advanced vector processing and multiple execution cores. At TransGaming, we believe that this convergence will continue to the point where typical systems have only one type of processing unit, with large numbers of cores and very wide vector execution units available for high performance parallel execution. In this kind of environment, all graphics processing will ultimately take place in software. In this talk, we will explore the converging nature of CPU and GPU approaches to processing, how dynamic specialization allows CPUs to efficiently perform tasks usually done by GPUs, and why we believe that the increased flexibility of more programmable architectures will ultimately win out over fixed function hardware, even in areas such as texture sampling. *TransGaming Inc.* works at the cutting edge of 3D graphics, building technologies that bridge the gap between platform boundaries to allow games to be played on a variety of devices and operating systems. TransGaming works with other industry leaders to update established APIs such as OpenGL, while also breaking new ground in software rendering technology, which we believe will become increasingly important as CPU and GPU technologies converge. *Nicolas Capens* is the architect of SwiftShader, TransGaming's high performance software renderer, and is also deeply involved in the ANGLE project, which provides efficient translation from OpenGL ES to Direct3D APIs for implementing WebGL on Windows. Hello CSC Members! We are hosting a faculty talk this Thursday, July 11 in MC 4041: 3D Movies and Computer Science by Lesley Northam Abstract: While humans started making 3D motion pictures in the 1800's, several technical and artistic challenges prevented widespread interest in the medium. By investing heavily in a computerized production pipeline, James Cameron's 2009 release of Avatar ushered in an era of mainstream interest in 3D film. However, many technical and artistic problems still find their way into otherwise-modern 3D movies.
