Hi all, Nominations for Computer Science Club positions closed yesterday at 6:00 PM. Elections will be held today (May 16) at *7:00 PM in MC Comfy*. Spring 2019 Elections

Greetings programs, The Computer Science Club will be holding elections for the Spring 2019 term on Thursday, May 16th in MC Comfy (MC 3001) at 19:00. During the meeting, the president, vice-president, treasurer and assistant vice-president (formerly secretary) will be elected, the sysadmin will be ratified, and the librarian and office manager will be appointed. If you'd like to run for any of these positions or nominate someone, you can write your name on the whiteboard in the CSC office (MC 3036/3037) or send me (Charlie) an email at cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca. Every effort will be made to note down whiteboard nominations, but it is highly recommended to send me an email in addition to writing on the whiteboard. You can also deposit nominations in the CSC mailbox in MathSoc or present them to me in-person. Nominations will close at 18:00 on Wednesday, May 15th. Prof talk: Making the Switch: Going from 2D to S3D - STC 0020

Hi all, We will be having our second prof talk of the term with Lesley Istead, on April 5, 3:30 pm in STC 0020. She will be talking about the problems faced, and algorithms used in the film industry to go from 2D to S3D. Come listen to the talk and enjoy some free food! ====== Abstract: ====== For the last 10 years, most blockbusters have been released in both 2D and stereoscopic 3D. The move from 2D to S3D is non-trivial and involves many new algorithms and technologies. But there are still many problems to be solved and many improvements that can still be made. Hi all, We will be having out first prof talk of the term with Professor Craig Kaplan, on March 20, 4 pm in PHY 150. An abstract of the talk is given below. CSC and WiCS are also having a movie night on March 21, 6 pm to 8 pm in MC Comfy. Both the events are open for all. (including nonmembers) Details for both the events follow. ========== Prof. Talk ========== Abstract: Animated Tilings By slowly varying the shapes of tiles in a tiling, it's possible to create fun and interesting abstract animations. Many of these animations are a good fit for the genre of looping mathematical GIFs that proliferate in social media. In this talk, I'll introduce a few core concepts from tiling theory and then discuss techniques for constructing tilings that evolve in space or in time. ==================== CSC and WiCS Movie Night ==================== Join us and bring all your friends to CSC & WiCS' movie night! Hi all, The CS Club is hosting a Git 101 workshop on March 2, 12 PM in QNC 1502. Git and source code management is an essential tool in software development. Knowing how to make the best out of it will help you get out of tricky situations, and allow you to be a better engineer. Come learn some basic topics with us including the motivation for using it, interaction with git using the command line, pull requests, feature branch workflow, etc. This event targets first years with minimal git experience. Scheduled Downtime for CSC Machines Thursday, Feb. 21

Hi all, There will be scheduled downtime for maintenance on many Computer Science Club servers on Thursday, February 21 beginning at 9:45 AM. Machines are expected to be up by 11:30 AM, but issues may arise that require more time to correct. The list of affected public servers is: taurine sucrose corn-syrup high-fructose-corn-syrup (hfcs) caffeine (csclub.uwaterloo.ca <http://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/>) Please save all of your work as servers will be rebooted throughout the maintenance period. We also suggest you take backups for anything important. During this time, CSC email will be inaccessible but mail will be queued up and delivered after the maintenance period is over. All websites hosted by CSC will be inaccessible for a short period of time as caffeine is rebooted. CSC Cloud will also be unavailable, and any virtual machines on CSC cloud will have to be manually restarted after the maintenance window.
