Hotspot JVM talk and rescheduled Unix 201

Hey everyone, WiCS is hosting a talk this Tuesday March 14th that should be of general interest to CSC members: # Hotspot Virtual Machine's Execution by Monica Beckwith Abstract: Monica Beckwith has worked with the Java Virtual Machine for more than a decade not just optimizing the JVM heuristics, but also improving the Just-in-time(JIT) code quality for various processor architectures as well as working with the garbage collectors and improving garbage collection for server systems. During this talk, Monica will cover a few JIT and Runtime optimizations and she will dive into the HotSpot garbage collection and provide an overview of the various garbage collectors available in HotSpot. The talk is open to everyone and is happening in STC 0040 at 6pm on Tuesday. Reminder: Unix 201 is a talk and demo about more advanced Unix tricks and tools than are taught in our regular Unix 101 events. We have been informed that the air conditioning will be turned off in the MC machine room (where our machines are located). While alternative cooling options are planned, it may become necessary to turn off some machines to reduce heat and protect our machines from damage. CSC Elections and Code of Conduct Changes Next Thursday

Greetings Programs, The CSC will be holding its termly election next Thursday, January 5th, at 6PM in MC Comfy. We will be electing a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary, and appointing a Systems Administrator (to be ratified at the election), Office Manager, and Librarian. If you would like to nominate someone (for one of the 4 elected positions), you may either write their name on the whiteboard in the CSC office, or send an email to cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca (from either your @uwaterloo.ca or @csclub.uwaterloo.ca email) with the userid of the member you would like to nominate, and the position(s) you want to nominate them for. Note that only mathsoc social members (including all undergraduate math students) are eligible. Nominations will close at 6PM on Wednesday (Jan 11). Voting will be done in a heads-down, hands-up manner and is restricted to MathSoc social members. A full description of the roles and the election procedure are listed in our Constitution, available at https://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/about/constitution. In addition, at the election we will be considering changes to the Code of Conduct. The gist of the changes we will be considering is: - Have decisions made by committee, not by one person - Keep the faculty advisor in the loop, and give them a veto - Clarify this doesn't override laws or uni policy - List relevant university policies - Define the office, IRC, and events as specific CSC spaces - Say that new members should sign the CoC - Make exceptions in confidentiality section for the faculty advisor and police services Any questions regarding the election can be sent to cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca. ALT+TAB today at 6PM, EOT next Monday

Greetings Programs, This is a reminder that we are running ALT+TAB today at 6PM, in MC 4063! ALT+TAB is the CSC's version of SASMS. Six CSC members will be giving brief, 25-minute talks on various CS-related topics (a list of the members and their talks is at the bottom of this email). It's a great way to learn a little bit about a lot of different things. There will also be free dinner provided at the event. In addition, the CSC will be hosting its last event of the term, the EOT party, on Monday Dec. 5 at 6PM in MC Comfy. We'll take over the Comfy and have free dinner for everyone, and just hang out with each other. Calum T.
