Jane Street Talk & Power Outage

Hi everyone! Jane Street's Yaron Minsky is coming to Waterloo to give a talk aimed at undergraduate students. The talk titled Data Driven UIs, Incrementally will be held in DC 1302 on Oct. 15th 5:30-6:30pm. Yaron Minsky got his BA in Mathematics from Princeton and his PhD in Computer Science from Cornell, where he studied distributed systems. He joined Jane Street in 2003, where he started out developing quantitative trading strategies, going on to found the firm's quantitative research group. Here's a brief description of the talk: Trading in financial markets is a data-driven affair, and as such, it requires applications that can efficiently filter, transform and present data to users in real time. But there's a difficult problem at the heart of building such applications: finding a way of expressing the necessary transformations of the data in a way that is simultaneously easy to understand and efficient to execute over large streams of data. This talk will show how we've approached this problem using Incremental, an OCaml library for constructing dynamic computations that update efficiently in response to changing data. We'll show how Incremental can be used throughout the application, from the servers providing the data to be visualized, to the JavaScript code that generates DOM nodes in the browser. We'll also discuss how these applications have driven us to develop ways of using efficiently diffable data structures to bridge the worlds of functional and incremental computing. Also, we have been informed of a planned power outage that will affect CSC equipment on Oct. 9 at 11pm until Oct. 10 at 5am. During this time, all CSC systems and services will be unavailable Please ensure that you have saved all work before then and that you have a backup of any important files. Fall 2018 Elections

Hello CSC members. The CSC elections will be held on Tuesday, September 18th at 6:30pm in the MC Comfy lounge. We will be electing a President, Vice President, Assistant Vice President (formerly Secretary), and a Treasurer. The elected exec will appoint a System Administrator, Office Manager, Librarian, and IMAPd. You must be a MathSoc social member (e.g., a math faculty undergrad) to run for an elected position or System Administrator, or to vote. If you'd like to run or nominate someone for a position, please put a piece of paper with their name and user id in the nominations box in the CSC or email that information to cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca. The nomination period will end one week from now, on Monday. A full description of the positions and procedures are in the CSC constitution. We need at least 15 members to start the meeting. Update on August Power Outage - taurine and sucrose unavailable

Hello all, As of Saturday, Sept. 1, power has been restored to the machine room and the Systems Committee has restored most systems and services following the power outage in August. Unfortunately, we are currently unable to boot taurine and sucrose. We are unable to estimate if/when they will be repaired, so you should consider using alternate general use systems (corn-syrup and high-fructose-corn-syrup). StarCon CFP

Hi all! Hope everyone is joining the break between terms. With your time off, consider applying to speak at StarCon, a lightning talk conference here at UW. StarCon is returning to Waterloo next January 19 & 20, and you can now submit an application to speak at the conference. Conferences and technical talks are wonderful ways to share experiences and pick up something new, so if you've never given a talk, StarCon *still* wants to hear from you! Last year, half of their speakers were first-time speakers and 40% were students! Downtime (August 19-30) due to planned power outage

Hello all, We have been informed of planned power outages that will affect the availability of Computer Science Club systems during the month of August. The Math & Computer (MC) building will be without power from Tuesday, August 21st until Thursday, August 30th. As most of our equipment is located in this building, club machines will be unavailable during this time. The Systems Committee will begin shutting down club equipment after 12pm EDT Sunday, August 19th. Please ensure that you have saved all work before then and that you have copied any important files out of your CSC home directory. We are hoping to maintain the availability of our Open Source Software Mirror (mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca) throughout the entire outage. The following services will be hosted in Davis Centre (DC) during the MC outage. However, DC will also experience short outages on August 25th (7am - 3pm) and August 29-30th (7pm - 3am), where these services may also be temporarily unavailable: - Email (see the notice at the bottom of this email) - Web hosting (CSC website and outage notifications for member/club websites) We will begin to restart machines once power has been restored and is stable. Please note that it will take some time to restore 100% of our computing infrastructure. Updates to this notice will be available on the CSC homepage (https://csclub.uwaterloo.ca) If you have any concerns or questions, please contact syscom(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca.
