Upcoming System Maintenance and Outage

Hello everyone, The Computer Science Club is scheduling system maintance starting Friday, Oct. 21 at 12pm extending until Sunday, Oct. 23 at 12pm. This maintenance period includes an extended outage on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 7am to 11pm due to a planned power outage in MC. Throughout the maintenance period, the following services will be impacted: - Web hosting (all personal and club websites) - Email (@csclub.uwaterloo.ca email addresses) - Servers and Office Terminals - Can be rebooted/unavailable at any time during the maintenance window - Note: HFCS will be upgraded from Debian Jessie to Debian Stretch All services/servers will be unavailable during Saturday’s power outage, with the exception of mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca which is expected to remain available thanks to the assistance of the Computer Science Computing Facility (CSCF). CSC/WiCS Go Outside!

Hello CSC, I hope you enjoyed your reading week? Today we have a social event; we're going outside with Women in Computer Science! The event starts at 6PM at the Columbia Lake 2 Firepit (top-left dot in https://uwaterloo.ca/economics/sites/ca.economics/files/uploads/files/firep…) There will be frisbees, a campfire, pitas, s'mores, hot chocolate, and other snacks. Hope to see you there! Also, come out to a Feminism in STEM 101 panel next Tuesday, with Dr. Prabhakar Ragde speaking and Fatema Boxwala moderating. The event takes place next Tuesday at 5:30 PM in QNC 1507. Discussion will include how feminism is useful in STEM and there will be plenty of time for that nagging question you want to bring. Greetings programs, Remember that we have our first talk of the term today at 6PM, in MC 4021! Elana Hashman will be talking about using functional programming languages (such as Racket) for real-world projects, and how some elements of the OOP paradigm translate to the functional programming paradigm. Her abstract is at the bottom of this email. In addition, next Thursday October 13, the CSC and WiCS (Women in Computer Science) are co-hosting a social event: CSC/WiCS Go Outside. At 6PM, we will be going to the Columbia Lake 2 firepit, to enjoy some food around a campfire. Member Talk Abstract: I transitioned from writing software in imperative, object-oriented (OO) programming languages to doing functional programming (FP) full-time, and you can do it, too! In this talk, I'll make a case for using FP for real-world development, cover some cases where common FP language features substitute for design patterns and OOP structure, and provide some examples of translating traditional OO design patterns into functional code. Upcoming Event and Office Training

Greetings Programs, For our new members, welcome to the Computer Science Club! We will be hosting our first event this Thursday (Oct. 6) at 6PM, in MC 4021. Hello everyone, The Computer Science Club will be holding elections for the Fall 2016 term on Monday, September 19th at 6:30pm in the MC Comfy Lounge (MC 3001). The following positions will be elected: President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary. The following positions will be appointed: Systems Administrator (to be ratified at the meeting), Office Manager and Librarian. Additionally, we will be looking for members to join the Programme Committee . If you would like to run or nominate someone for any of the elected positions, you can put your name in a special box in the CSC office (MC 3036/3037) or by sending an email to the Chief Returning Officer (Zachary) at cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca <mailto:cro@csclub.uwaterloo.ca>. Please note that executive positions are restricted to MathSoc social members. We welcome the participation of first years. Hello programs, Join us on Monday, July 25th at 6pm in the MC Comfy Lounge for an exciting prof talk by Richard Mann on Open Source Computer Sound Measurement. The abstract for the talk is below. We will follow this up by an EOT event with dinner and board games! Last event of the term, get hype. Abstract: > > > An ideal computer audio system should faithfully reproduce signals of > all frequencies in the audible range (20 to 20,000 cycles per second). > Real systems, particularly mobile devices and laptops, may still > produce acceptable quality, but often have a limited response, > particularly at the low (bass) frequencies. > > Sound/acousic energy refers to time varying pressure waves in air. > When recording sound, the acoustic signal will be picked up by > microphone, which converts it to electrical signals (voltages). Hello programs! We have a couple of great talks coming up soon. On Thursday, July 2st at 6pm in MC 4045, Bill Cowan will be giving a talk on Notorious CS452. Abstract below: CS452, aka the trains course, has for some time enjoyed notoriety as a playground for over-achieving masochists. To maintain its reputation it receives a periodic upgrade, which is now due. This talk discusses possible directions for the upgrade in the context of the philosophy that has guided its evolution over the decades of its existence. If you've taken trains, want to take trains, or even just want to learn about the course spoken of in hushed whispers... this talk is for you. For the last week of classes, we have a double-decker event for you. On Monday, July 2th, we have a talk by Richard Mann on computer audio (abstract and more details to come), and an end of term event right after.
