Hello Everyone, The nomination period for the Fall 2016 executive team has closed. The elections will take place on Monday, September 19 at 6:30pm in the MC Comfy Lounge (MC 3001). Voting is restricted to current club members who are Social Members of the Mathematics Society. Voting will use the approval voting system. This means that you can vote for as many candidates as you want for any position. At the meeting, votes will be conducted in a heads-down, hands-up fashion. Absentee votes can be emailed to cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca <mailto:cro@csclub.uwaterloo.ca>. They must be sent before 6:00pm on Monday, September 19. Hello everyone, The Computer Science Club will be holding elections for the Fall 2016 term on Monday, September 19th at 6:30pm in the MC Comfy Lounge (MC 3001). The following positions will be elected: President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary. The following positions will be appointed: Systems Administrator (to be ratified at the meeting), Office Manager and Librarian. Additionally, we will be looking for members to join the Programme Committee . If you would like to run or nominate someone for any of the elected positions, you can put your name in a special box in the CSC office (MC 3036/3037) or by sending an email to the Chief Returning Officer (Zachary) at cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca <mailto:cro@csclub.uwaterloo.ca>. Please note that executive positions are restricted to MathSoc social members. We welcome the participation of first years. Hello programs, Join us on Monday, July 25th at 6pm in the MC Comfy Lounge for an exciting prof talk by Richard Mann on Open Source Computer Sound Measurement. The abstract for the talk is below. We will follow this up by an EOT event with dinner and board games! Last event of the term, get hype. Abstract: > > > An ideal computer audio system should faithfully reproduce signals of > all frequencies in the audible range (20 to 20,000 cycles per second). > Real systems, particularly mobile devices and laptops, may still > produce acceptable quality, but often have a limited response, > particularly at the low (bass) frequencies. > > Sound/acousic energy refers to time varying pressure waves in air. > When recording sound, the acoustic signal will be picked up by > microphone, which converts it to electrical signals (voltages). Hello programs! We have a couple of great talks coming up soon. On Thursday, July 2st at 6pm in MC 4045, Bill Cowan will be giving a talk on Notorious CS452. Abstract below: CS452, aka the trains course, has for some time enjoyed notoriety as a playground for over-achieving masochists. To maintain its reputation it receives a periodic upgrade, which is now due. This talk discusses possible directions for the upgrade in the context of the philosophy that has guided its evolution over the decades of its existence. If you've taken trains, want to take trains, or even just want to learn about the course spoken of in hushed whispers... this talk is for you. For the last week of classes, we have a double-decker event for you. On Monday, July 2th, we have a talk by Richard Mann on computer audio (abstract and more details to come), and an end of term event right after. The following general-use servers will be rebooted on Thursday, June 2nd around 10am (expected downtime is 30 minutes, but it is possible that it could be longer): - corn-syrup - high-fructose-corn-syrup (HFCS) - taurine Our web server container may also become unavailable at this time: - caffeine Sucrose was preemptively rebooted last week and thus is not included in this downtime notice. Note that some CSC services depend on these servers (e.g. /scratch) and thus will also be unavailable at this time. Please ensure all that all compute jobs running have saved their state prior to the reboot, especially if you are utilizing /scratch. Hello members of the CS Club! First of all, thank you to all who came out and voted, by email or in person, to our elections last night. There were many timbits had. Without further ado, *Election Results:* (laden) Luqman Aden is your new President, (matedesc) Melissa Angelica Tedesco is your new Vice-president, (jj2baile) Jonathan Jeral Bailey is your new Treasurer, (askothar) Aditya Shivam Kothari is your new Secretary, (jxpryde) Jordan Xavier Pryde is your new Systems Administrator, (ztseguin) Zachary Seguin is your new Office Manager, (s455wang) Charlie Wang is your new Librarian, and (mnmailho) Marc Mailhot is your new Fridge Regent. So that's what happened this week. If you want to know what happens next week, keep reading for like just a few more lines. *CSC goes to board games night* (or, CSC uses 'militia' on Mathsoc) Board games are fun. The CSC would like to have a board games night, but MathSoc already does it so well. Clearly the only solution is an invasion. Come join us on *Thursday, May 19th, about 7pm* in taking over MathSoc board games night. We will form a CSC cluster and have fun.
