Hello everyone, The Computer Science Club will be holding elections for Spring 2022 in person, on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at 5:30 pm in DC 1351. The president, vice-president, treasurer, and assistant vice-president (formerly secretary) will be elected, and the sysadmin will be appointed. If you'd like to run for any of these positions or nominate someone, you can send an email to cro(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca, or present them in-person to the CRO, Amy Wang, or write your name on the whiteboard in the CSC office (MC 3036/3037). Power outage this Friday + Mentors needed for resume review and mock interviews

Hello CSC, Due to electrical work in MC 3015, there will be a power outage on most CSC machines this Friday (January 7) from 8 am to 12 pm EST. To prepare for the outage, CSC machines will power off at 7 am. Please save your work and logout before then. --------- The Winter 2022 Bootcamp Event is looking for mentors to take on resume critiques, host mock interviews, and help prepare students for their co-op search! In order to qualify to be a mentor, you must at least have started your second coop. There is a resume review event happening on January 16 from 6:00pm-10:00pm ET and a mock interview event on January 23 from 6:00pm-10:00pm ET. You can choose to participate at either event for a select number of hours! All sessions will take place virtually on our Bootcamp Discord Server! Students will have a chance to meet with you 1 on 1 to discuss their resumes/conduct their interviews. Waterloo Warriors Band - account access

Server upgrade planned for November 28 + Winter 2022 Internal Committee Apps Open

Hello CSC, A planned software update will occur on November 28 on all CSC general-use machines. As this will require a reboot, the machines will be offline for a few minutes. We will send a "wall" warning message to all logged-in users at least one hour before the upgrade begins. If you have any questions/concerns, please contact the Systems Committee at syscom(a)csclub.uwaterloo.ca. --- Additionally, CS Club’s Internal Committee is hiring for Winter 2022! Hello CSC members, Welcome to a new school year! Here are a few of announcements for September. The Computer Science Club will be holding elections for Fall 2021 virtually. The president, vice-president, treasurer and assistant vice-president (formerly secretary) will be elected and the sysadmin, librarian and office manager will be appointed. As a mentor, you’ll be tasked with helping teams of students create roadmaps of their project, setting milestones, and making sure that everyone stays on task. Mandatory public-key authentication on all CSC machines

Hello CSC, Due to the increasing security threats leveraging passwords, the University of Waterloo has moved to require that all SSH Servers exposed to the public Internet must enforce strong authentication by November 1st, 2021. To comply with this requirement, we will be disabling password authentication for SSH on all CSC general-use machines on October 15th, 2021. We suggest that you add your SSH public key to your ~/.ssh/authorized_keys if you have not done so already. We will still enable password authentication on the campus network. This means that you may still login via SSH with your password if you are physically on campus, are using a student CS machine as a jump host, or are using the campus VPN. However, we still suggest setting up public key auth anyways for non-campus access. Alt Tab Speaker Applications (Due July 15) + Afterhours: Burnout (July 17) + Machine Downtime (July 17)

Hello programs, Here are a few announcements for July. Join CSC for Alt-Tab, an event that consists of 10-15 minute talks by students on some interesting topics in the field of tech! Some topics that students have delivered talks on include virtual reality, pathfinding, web development, and competitive programming. The event will be hosted virtually at the end of July! Currently, we are looking for speakers for the event who are passionate about tech and want to gain some public-speaking experience. We would love to hear from everyone! Application Deadline: Thursday, July 15th at 11:59pm ET. ------ CSC's next Afterhours is here! Afterhours is a series where we get the opportunity to dive into uncomfortable topics and share our experiences, as well as tips and tricks on how to overcome these problems. It's unfortunately common to feel burnt out and exhausted, especially at this point in the term. This Afterhours will be a discussion about recognizing burnout, recovering from burnout, and preventing it from occurring. Speakers will share their personal stories, and the conversation will be open for all participants to discuss and share their own experiences.
