by Team Devs Beyond Borders 28 Sep '15

28 Sep '15

Devs Without Borders <http://devswithoutborders.org>, the organization behind the upcoming <Br/eak>PovertyHackathon <http://devswithoutborders.org/breakpoverty> are looking for students with a background in development, hardware or software, who want to learn new technologies, build awesome stuff and work with smart people in Toronto and Kenya. The <Br/eak>Poverty Hackathon will bring charitable-minded developers together to build life changing applications for the developing world. These apps will help those in rural and impoverished areas with farming, small business, health and education: as many of their own channels to technology, communication and knowledge is through their mobile device. The winning app will be test launched by the Charity Event Partner Free The Children in rural Kenya. This will be Canada’s first International Development hackathon to connect developers in Toronto and Nairobi to build applications on web and mobile that benefit individuals living in rural and impoverished areas in East Africa. Hosted at Bitmaker Labs in Toronto, with Kenyan Attendees teleconferencing in, teams will be able to create meaningful projects from scratch in just 25 hours. To register and for more information, please visit devswithoutborders.org/breakpoverty Student Developer tickets are only $12!

Full Stack Developer Opportunity with Financial Technology Startup (New York City)
by Jeremy Lee 23 Sep '15

23 Sep '15

(Location: New York City) NYC-based 2 person team (one is a Waterloo Math grad) from Wall Street and the banking industry looking for a great full stack developer to help solve a problem that plagues our clients. We’re building a minimum viable product (MVP) for a financial technology concept that will provide a scalable solution for our client base. We’re looking for 2 things: 1. An experienced developer that can implement and finish projects on time. 2. A developer who can strip away features in the app’s core to get the first iteration up and working in 3 to 4 weeks. We have no strict requirements regarding tech choices other than that your stack should be well established: Rails, Django, MEAN etc. We prefer deployment on Heroku, digital ocean or Amazon. The project is straightforward but solves a very large problem affecting millions of people with suboptimal investments. It’s an opportunity for a talented developer to really raise the bar and put their passion into a project that has deep meaning and value. We are based at WeWork, one of the best technology and startup hubs in New York City and the world ( https://www.wework.com/locations/new-york-city/nomad) - Estimated Length: MVP (1 month) with opportunity for 4-month or full-time role - Desired Start Date: Fall 2015 - Location: New York City (exceptions permitted; please contact for details) - Remuneration: USD $35-45/hr (depending on experience, higher for full-time) - Contact Information: Jeremy Lee (jerlee(a)gmail.com) - Company based out of WeWork tech community (www.wework.com)

Rakuten Info Session
by Lyle Waldman 31 Oct '14

31 Oct '14

Rakuten, Inc. is holding an info session on Tuesday, November 4th (next Tuesday!) in TC2218(A&B) from 5-6 pm. They are recruiting both undergrad and Masters students for post-graduation employment. The company is located in Tokyo, Japan, and they are hiring for positions located at head office, so if you're interested in working in Japan, come out and take a look! ------------------------------------- Information about the company: Rakuten, Inc. calls themselves an "online real-estate company". Their main business operation, Rakuten Ichiba, is similar in nature to Amazon's online shopping business. In addition, Rakuten has many other business ventures, including a travel site (focused on intra-Japan travel) and financial ventures, as well as owning subsidiaries such as the Canadian e-book company Kobo Inc., located in Toronto. Rakuten is one of the most internationally-facing companies in Japan, priding themselves on the fact that the company's main language of business is English, rather than Japanese, and they are both actively recruiting English speakers as well as actively trying to increase the English proficiency of their Japanese employees. ---------------------------------------- Please see the attached flyer for additional information about the info session.
