Happy new year! I hope 2012 is treating you well so far.
This week Google announced the launch of the Freshman Engineering Practicumhttp://www.google.com/jobs/engpracticum/fepinternship application for summer 2012. We would like your help in advertising this program to qualified freshmen (first year) students.
In case you are not familiar, Freshman Engineering Practicum is a full-length, paid, summer software engineering internship. Students work on production-level projects in a team environment, attend trainings to enhance their technical and professional skills, and receive mentorship from Google engineers. The program is open to all qualified college freshmen (first years), and is committed to addressing diversity in the field of Computer Science. Students who are a member of a group that is historically underrepresented in the technology industry are encouraged to apply.
We are looking for students who meet these criteria:
- Currently enrolled in a BA/BS program, majoring or intending to major in Computer Science or Electrical and Computer Engineering, at a university in the United States or Canada - Eligible to work in the United State. - A current first year in University - Have taken at least one Computer Science course (AP Computer Science included) - Have some programming knowledge of either Java, Python, C, or C++
We are asking for your help spreading the word in two ways:
- Please feel free to pass along the below e-mail to first year students you know who might be interested in this program, encouraging them to apply - *Faculty*: Please submit nominations of your top students here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dFE3V3lVNDEzX1F6QmpLYzF.... We will happily accept as many nominations as you have, simply fill out the form for each student. We will reach out to them directly to let them know they have been nominated and encourage them to apply. The student application deadline is February 5, 2012. However, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and we encourage students to apply early.
*****Please note that unfortunately this program does not fulfill co-op requirements since it is not 16 weeks long***

Many aspiring computer scientists could benefit from a program that bridges the gap between academic study and a professional internship. Google wants to inspire these students to continue in the field with such a program.
With this in mind, Google announces the second year of the Freshman Engineering Practicum internship ( http://www.google.com/jobs/engpracticum/fep/) program for Summer 2012. Current freshmen majoring, or intending to major, in Computer Science or Electrical and Computer Engineering will be selected to participate in the Practicum. This program includes three main components: a software project, skills-based training, and professional development. Freshman Engineering Practicum is only available at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, CA.
