
Hello everyone!!! We’re excited to share another month of updates and events from the Computer Science Club. From new services and hiring opportunities to successful past events and exciting upcoming ones, there's something here for everyone. Updates: Service Update: Our new messaging platform, Matrix, is nearing deployment. Matrix offers a secure and encrypted alternative to traditional platforms, with support for most of the features found in Discord. We extend our sincere thanks to the Systems Committee for their outstanding work in setting up the Matrix servers so efficiently and making all our lives easier. Plushie Update: We are thrilled to announce that new Codey plushies are now available for purchase at the CSC office for $11 CAD. Drop by and grab yours while supplies last! Hiring notice: The Computer Science Club is now accepting applications. Whether you’re interested in organizing impactful events, supporting community initiatives, connecting with industry professionals, or working with a dedicated team, we invite you to get involved! The deadline to apply will be July 31st, 11:59 PM. Please find the role descriptions in the link attached below: csclub.ca/hiring Upcoming Events: EOT Social: Join us on July 21st from 7:00–9:00 PM at Columbia Lake Fire Pit 1 for our End of Term bonfire event, co-hosted with WiCS, DSC, and Tech+. Enjoy an evening of networking and relaxation with complimentary s’mores, burgers, and games. This is a great opportunity to unwind before exams and celebrate the end of the term with fellow students. Previous Events Recap: Badminton Tournament: On July 4th, CSC hosted a spirited badminton tournament at PAC Small, where students enjoyed a night of friendly competition, free snacks and drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the event a success. Professor talks: Professor Freda Shi: On June 10th at STC 0050, Professor Shi presented a talk exploring how insights from human linguistics can enhance the design of AI systems. The talk was accessible to all, regardless of background, and provided a compelling intersection between language and artificial intelligence. A huge thanks to Professor Shi for hosting this event. Professor Tavernes Barnes: On June 23rd in MC 4061, Professor Barnes delivered an insightful session on performance optimization in modern computing systems. From understanding CPU microarchitecture to using the Linux perf tool for software profiling, attendees gained practical skills in writing high-performance code, including a live demonstration of real-world software optimization. A huge thanks to Professor Barnes for hosting this event. Leetcode tournament On July 9th, CSC held this term’s Leetcode competition in STC 0020, where teams of four tackled algorithmic challenges for a chance to win CSC merchandise. The event welcomed participants of all experience levels and included snacks and refreshments to keep everyone energized throughout the competition. Trivia Night: Our Trivia Night on June 18th in DC 1350 brought together students for an evening of friendly competition, covering both computer science and general knowledge topics. Teams competed for prizes and bragging rights, making it a lively and engaging experience for all who attended. We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone involved in CSC activities this term, from our dedicated executive members to the students who participated in our events.
