Return of CSC Newsletter -- CSC Update -- October 2024

Hi CSC! CSC Newsletter is back! After almost two years of inactivity, we are bringing it back. We will use the CSC Newsletter to bring you updates of what is happening behind the scenes in order to encourage communication and improve our transparency. This is something (somewhat new) that we are trying out, so if you have any feedback regarding the Newsletter, let us know either by emailing us at exec@csclub.uwaterloo.ca, or use the following link to submit feedback: https://csclub.ca/feedback. The past month has been a turbulent time for CSC. We will be doing our best to communicate what has happened over the past month and what we have been doing. Here are some major things that has happened over the past month: * Our previous Systems Administrator, Nathan, resigned at the start of the month. We have appointed Ohm Patel (o32patel) as our new Systems Administrator, and this decision was ratified by the members of CSC on October 8th at the General Meeting. * Our previous Office Manager, Ivy, resigned near the end of the month. Right now, we are still in the process of appointing one or more Office Managers. For now, Tiger, one of our previous Office Managers and current Office Manager Advisor, is the acting Office Manager until we officially appoint (a) new Office Manager(s). And here are some things that we have been working on: * Issues in the Office: We have been made aware of several issues that has been happening in the office sometimes, and, to some extent, the Discord server; mainly, discussion of topics that makes some people uncomfortable, bullying or shaming people over their identity or small mistakes they make, and gossiping and rumors about other clubs and organizations. We are looking into ways to combat these behaviors. So far, we have been reminding people to be respectful, though no official policy changes have been made yet. We will discuss with our advisors and other relevant people on how to best address this behavior and improve the office environment. * General Meeting: As mentioned previously, we hosted a General Meeting on October 8, both for the ratification of the Systems Administrator and providing an update on what our teams have been working on. It is likely that we are going to host another General Meeting some time near the end of the term, with more information to come. Keep an eye on the announcements for more details! * Funding: We have been working on sponsorships and collaborations with other companies and organizations in order to secure funding for server maintenance, server upgrades, and equipment. * Hiring: Hiring will begin very soon, and we are still planning the process for hiring. Tentatively, hiring will open some time in the middle of November. Keep an eye out on the announcements if you wish to be involved with the CSC! * Events: There are a couple of new events coming up! Look out for the Careers Nights on November 4 and Codeylympics on November 6! We are planning additional events as well, like Specialization Talk and Dodgeball Night, so keep an eye out on the announcements for those. * Transparency and Accountability: We are working hard to make sure that we are transparent with our actions and accountable to the CSC body. Because most of us have been busy with our work or school over the past month, we haven't been the best at communicating our updates, and we apologize for that. We will continue to provide monthly updates like this, and if we are hosting another General Meeting, that will be another opportunity for you to connect with us. We request that you all hold us accountable, so if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback, please let us know, either by talking to one of the execs, or through the anonymous feedback form here: https://csclub.ca/feedback. * Return of CSC Newsletter: We have recently remembered that this is a thing, and we haven't used it for almost two years. We are going to try bringing it back, and bringing our monthly CSC updates on both our Discord and our newsletter mailing list. Let us know if you have any feedback using the link above!
