Hi all! Here are the updates of CSC over December:
* **Elections**: We are hosting an election soon! The elections happen
on Monday, January 13th at 7pm in Room DC 1302 or on our Discord server
(https://csclub.ca/discord) If you are interested in deciding on who
the next execs of CSC are, make sure to attend. If you can’t attend, you
can contact the CRO at cro(a)csclub.uwaterolo.ca for an absentee ballot.
* **Constitution changes**: They can be found at
https://csclub.ca/amendments, the changes are aimed at changing
Syscom/Termcom such that it is controlled by current students, and there
is a clear path to promotion to Syscom. As well as better defined
privileges for both. The voting on the changes will happen some time
soon, so keep an eye on the announcements!
* **New merch**: New merchandise designed in-house by our wonderful team
members has been made available for purchase at the office.
* Bucket Hat with Codey on a Sailboat: $18
* Codey Bubble Tea Enamel Pin: $4.75
* Sample photos of the bucket hat and Codey enamel pin can be found on
UW CSC's Instagram Page https://www.instagram.com/p/DDXqT1OypRM
* **MathSoc bought a camera!!!**: At the recommendation of CSC
Photography Team, MathSoc has agreed to purchase a Nikon Z50 II
Mirrorless camera kit to supplement the current Canon PowerShot bridge
camera, with much better low-light performance, focus, and colour
science. It has arrived after pre-order and will be made available for
all MathSoc clubs to borrow for their own purposes. Training for the Z50
II for CSC Photography Team will start in the new year.
* **Hiring starts and ends**: We sent out hiring links and posters a
month ago, the deadline to apply was December 1. Offers for most teams
should be getting released around now, but don’t worry if you haven’t
gotten anything yet.
* **Powernap is down**: Powernap, which has the office speakers and
office indicators connected to it, is currently down. So no more loud
music at any time, including at 5 am, very unfortunately. We are working
to fix it right now.
* **Looking for profs for prof talks**: We are currently emailing CS,
and math professors to ask them whether they would like to give talks on
various subjects through CSC.
* **Funding Updates**: CSC recently applied for funding from MEF to
upgrade our free (as in freedom) software mirror server,
potassium-benzoate, which is available at mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca.
This server has been overloaded for months due to high traffic, and
we’re awaiting MEF’s response to our proposal. Additionally, we sought
funding from WEEF to upgrade our CSC Cloud servers
(cloud.csclub.uwaterloo.ca), but unfortunately, our request was denied,
with $0 allocated.
* **Downtime on the servers**: By the time you get this update, all the
servers (and services) should be back up, and online. On December 22nd
plantops cut power to MC to do some work, and by extension, some of our
servers went offline. They should all be back online by the time you’re
seeing this message.
* **Events for next term**: There are a lot of events that are being
planned for next term, some of which include; Unix 101 tutorials, Prof
Talks, and Code Parties! Stay tuned for the next newsletter to find out
what will events will be running, and when!
* **Projects program went well!**: Recently we finished our projects
program! The program allowed members to code, create and collaborate
together to make ideas come to life. Big thank you to the passionate
participants and mentors for making this wonderful opportunity come to
life. Shout out to Iris and Lindsay for organizing this entire program.
Finally congratulations to Bruce Wang, Jonathan, Alex Qin, and Vincent
Nguyen for winning and good job everyone else!
* **Website finally updated**: Our club’s website https://csclub.ca has
finally been updated for the first time since W24. Tejas and Adi
(alumni) were able to get the website’s continuous integration and
deployment back online so our website can finally be updated. Also now
that our website is up to date, check out our events page for our future
events: https://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/events/.
